WOMANHOOD

MOTHERHOOD

I believe there is great power in sharing personal stories. Through my work, I seek to interrogate categories of gender identity that restrict and exclude. My Womanhood | Motherhood project, a photographic endeavor that came from my experimentation with portraiture and the realization that this medium allowed me to tap into my own intuition and empathy to portray people in an expressive and democratic way. From my own experience of living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I see the ways in which my city is segregated and how often there is an absence of collective identity between separate communities. I see people best through photographs, and this project introduced me to a diverse group of women and allowed me to hear their stories and bear witness to their experiences. Displayed as a unified whole, viewers are invited to participate in making their own connections between subjects, and perhaps, see new ways that feminist identity can resonate with all of us.
